The Communications Network has seen several transformations over the past few decades but none so impactful and disruptive as the last decade. Broadly speaking, there are two categories of Communication Networks:
From a technology perspective, both categories have migrated towards IP based services, but in different ways. The traditional operators have migrated to IP wanting to keep control of their infrastructure and have adopted IMS/SIP and VoLTE as standards for communications. The disruptive OTT market on the other hand have adopted a mix of WebRTC, SIP and XMPP. Interestingly, while SIP was a common choice for OTT players, it has been largely superceded by WebRTC
The modern Communication Network does much more than carry packetized voice. In addition to just voice, people communicate via Video. In addition to SMS, people communicate via multimedia chats (WhatsApp, Facebook messenger). Managing and deploying a complex network such as this requires significant communication, IP and telecom expertise and that is where HSC comes in.
