Networks Market

The Communications Network has seen several transformations over the past few decades but none so impactful and disruptive as the last decade. Broadly speaking, there are two categories of Communication Networks:

  • Those that own spectrum (for wireless) and fiber/copper (for wireline): These are typically large operators, such as ATT, Verizon, Sprint, Reliance, Bharti, Orange and others around the world. They offer traditional cellular, landline as well as IP based communication services and also offer other vendors to ride their pipes and offer services in areas they don't play in (the MVNO market)
  • Those that don't own spectrum, but take advantage of the availability of free Internet (often riding over the operators infrastructure, known as Over The Top or OTT) to offer disruptive communication serivices. Examples of these are Skype, Google Hangouts, Vonage, and many others

From a technology perspective, both categories have migrated towards IP based services, but in different ways. The traditional operators have migrated to IP wanting to keep control of their infrastructure and have adopted IMS/SIP and VoLTE as standards for communications. The disruptive OTT market on the other hand have adopted a mix of WebRTC, SIP and XMPP. Interestingly, while SIP was a common choice for OTT players, it has been largely superceded by WebRTC. Modern Communication Networks do more than carry packetized voice. In addition to voice, people communicate via video. In addition to SMS, people communicate via multimedia chats (WhatsApp, Facebook messenger). Managing and deploying a complex network such as this requires significant communication, IP and telecom expertise and that is where HSC comes in.

Network nodes have changed from being hardware centric, fixed capacity networks to on-demand capacity and functionality enabled by technologies such as SDN, NFV, Orchestration etc. The wireless access network has evolved from 2G to 4G and is rapidly moving towards 5G with nodes migraing from custom hardware to general purpose servers.
